Hydrangea- Large group of deciduous flowering shrubs. Flowers are mostly set on last year’s wood, so pruning should be done right after flowering. Some newer varieties bloom on the current year’s growth. pH can affect the color of the blooms. The more acidic the pH the bluer the flower. More alkaline soils produce pink flowers. Hydrangeas are divided into two groups the Hortensias or Mopheads and the Lacecaps. The hortensias have sterile flowers that are large globose corymbs, often forming such a solid mass as to bend the stems. The lacecaps have a center of non-showy flowers and an outer ring of showy flowers creating a pinwheel effect. Withstands salt spray and is a good plant for the seashore garden.
